Bristol Bifold Team Make TV Debut on BBC One's DIY SOS

Nick Knowles and the team issued a call to arms and recruited friends, family and local trades to help transform the home of Ryan who became ill five years ago and hasn't been home since. In the episode Ryan's family brought him home permanently for the first time in years.

There are a lot of remarkable companies in Bristol who donated their products and time to help the family and we're really happy to be playing a small role in the next step in Ryan's life. You might even spot Gerald and the team fitting the bifold doors which we've donated to this deserving Bristolian family. Everyone had such a great time working together to help Ryan, it was an experience that our team at Bristol Bifold will never forget.

You can watch the show on BBC IPlayer and if it's not on there any more than please take a look at some of the photos and videos from that magical week below.

Good luck to Ryan and his family in their new home.

It happened sooner than expected. Remember when the BBC's DIY SOS team were filming in Hartcliffe, Bristol? We were really honoured to be one of many local companies and volunteers taking part to help Ryan and his family. Well, the other night our Bristol Bifold team made their TV debut on BBC One.

Bristol Bifold to Help Bristol Man as Part of BBC's DIY SOS

The idea is that everyone, including some of our team at Bristol Bifold, will come together to do 6 months worth of work in just 9 days. Pretty amazing hey!? The work by the DIY SOS team and trade volunteers from around Bristol has already started and we're going to be joining them tomorrow when we fit one of our bifold doors.

The deserving man at the centre of this DIY SOS episode is Ryan who became ill five years ago and hasn't been home since. Ryan began getting frequent, awfully painful headaches and upon examination in April 2012, doctors discovered he had a blocked ventricle in his brain, and operated to relieve the pressure which had caused brain damage. Following a series of operations he's now living at a rehab centre in Gloucester.

The work to Ryan's home is so important because it finally means that Ryan's family home will once again be his home. This is all Ryan and his family (two brothers and one sister) have wanted from the beginning. If the family don’t get this work done, Ryan will remain at the rehab centre.

Being able to live in his newly renovated home in Bristol will be great for Ryan's morale, but should also help him with his rehabilitation. This will be a life changing transformation for the whole family and Bristol Bifold is delighted to be a part of it.

"We're really excited to be a part of this project to help Ryan," says Simon Lippett, Bristol Bifold's Managing Director, "I can't wait to see the end result and Ryan's reaction at the Big Reveal on 6th April. There are obviously a lot of remarkable companies in Bristol who are donating their products and time to help the family and we're really happy to be playing a small role in the next step in Ryan's life."

If everything goes well, Ryan's family will be permanently bringing him home for the first time in years. The Big Reveal for Ryan and his family takes place on 6th April and you should be able to see the show next year. We will post some photos on our Facebook page as soon as we have some.

The appearance of Bristol Bifold on the BBC DIY SOS show in Hartcliffe is not an endorsement of our products by the BBC.

We're really excited!

Let me tell you why.

This weekend we're off to Hartcliffe in Bristol to fit one of our Origin bifold doors that we've donated to a deserving Bristolian family as part of the BBC's TV show DIY SOS: The Big Build!

5 Easy Ways to Get Your Garden Summer-Ready!

Below Title

Adding a splash of colour to your outside space is a simple and yet extremely effective way of revitalising a tired space. If your garden bench is peeling and rusty, or your plant pots are covered in algae a quick and relatively cheap way of sprucing up is a quick lick of paint.

Pops of colour amongst your greenery can help draw the eye away from any other unsightly bits (that are going to get done...later!) and enhance the view from inside. No more closing the doors and drawing the blinds – your garden will be a viewpoint from inside as well as out.

Furniture isn't just for indoors! Your outdoor furniture can really help lend a theme to your garden and create a relaxing and attractive place to host guests and unwind.

It doesn't have to cost the earth to furnish your garden either, keep a look out in charity shops and online for cheap benches which you can then paint and customise at home – you could even co-ordinate your furniture with your bifold doors merging the outside with your home.

For most, our garden is visible from at least one of the prominent rooms in our home, such as the kitchen or living room. This is even more likely when your bifold doors face out from that particular room – you want the vast expanse of view you are exposing to be a pretty one, right?

The garden becomes a pretty grey place throughout winter, meaning that come spring the majority of us are desperate to inject some colour.

You can purchase inexpensive terracotta plant pots from most garden centres, in a variety of colours. These can really change a space – especially wall-mounted planters which can be filled with climbing plants to create a wall of colour.

Fix it!

That gate that doesn't fit on its hinges properly? The slide that the kids broke at the end of summer? Even the gutters that need cleaning out – do it!

Get it out of the way early in the year so that come summer your garden is yours to enjoy without nagging feeling of things you haven't done. This will help you achieve what we like to call 'home improvement peace of mind' and really enable you to love your view this summer.

Make plans!

My final point is more specific – but, summer is one of our busiest times of the year due to the simple fact that the warm weather and glorious sunshine (that England always gets...right?) makes people realise how much they want to open up their home to that extra light and outside space and have bifold doors installed.

Come and have a chat with us about your plans now, so that you can have the doors you want in time for summer.

After what seems like the longest winter ever, we are just beginning to see glimpses of new green growth, blue skies and feel a hint of warmth in the air. The initial 'hurrah' felt at these things however is quickly replaced with a dread of what needs to be done to get your outdoor space 'summer-ready'...

This post will share 5 of our top tips to making sure that your garden/outside space fills you with a sense of pride, joy and excitement for the warm days to come!

Hello Spring....Cleaning!

Below Title

Stainless Steel

Whether it be sticky toddler fingers or muddy hands fresh from the garden, your door hardware is always going to take the toll of family life, meaning that every once in a while they need cleaning up.

To keep your stainless steel shiny, bright and clean, we recommend using a light mist of an aerosol based cleaners, wiped clean with a lint-free cloth (microfiber is great!). Don't use oil-based products and try to avoid bleach and whatever you do – no scouring pads!

Painted Walls

It's also around this time of year that you start to notice all the little imperfections that have worked their way onto your lovely painted walls over the holiday season.

To save time, money and effort, we prefer to clean off the scuffs and marks, rather than re-paint the entire wall. All you need is a soft sponge, a little water mixed with dishwashing liquid (the milder the better). Once the stain is removed be sure to rinse the wall afterward with plain water.

Let's face it, cleaning tiles is a dull job – so you want to make sure it's done as quickly and efficiently as possible – right?

The best way to achieve this is to use a neutral pH cleaner, or mix baking powder and water for a cheaper alternative. You can also use this mixture for cleaning grout – works wonders on white particularly!

Once you've made time to clean your home, make sure it's done properly – really clean it! Get it all out of the way so that afterwards you can enjoy your home to its best potential...and show it off!

Spring is always the perfect time to begin planning your year – home improvement wise! We are always incredibly busy over summer as people want bifolds in time for BBQ's! So why not come and have a chat with us sooner rather than later!

From the neat-freaks amongst you to the people who like to keep cleaning to a minimum, everyone could do with a little spruce-up come spring. There's just something in the air that makes you want your home to look its best!

During this post we'll share a few handy tips we've picked up over the years of speaking to our customers about home improvement that will hopefully be of use to you too!

A Company Update

Below Title

On our travels...

Last month we travelled to the National Self Building and Renovation Centre (nSBRC) in Swindon to man our stand there for the weekend. We've been before, but this time we were there for the entire weekend taking in the sights and talking (a lot!) about bifold doors.

This time we also upped our game – our new stand also features windows meaning that you could come and try before you buy over the weekend. The whole weekend was a great success and we hope to go back in the years to come – so if you didn't catch us this time, we might see you next time!

Windows, windows, windows!

Talking of windows, Origin (our main supplier) have just announced that they are able to offer a week delivery on windows (matching their already amazing bifold turnaround time). This means that when you place an order with us, no matter what – the windows will be ready in a weeks' time without compromising quality.

Of course, this doesn't mean that we can install them right away as we are only human and are usually booked solidly! But the fantastic production time means we can get your project moving as quickly as (humanly) possible – and we are trying to keep up with Origin!

Origin news...

Origin now also provide a monthly newsletter, which as a customer you may or may not be interested in, but for us it simply cements them as our favoured supplier – being passionate about keeping up with industry news and trends and supplying the highest quality product.

December was a pretty special month for Origin, due to the 3rd of December being the day the team produced their 100,000th door. It's a pretty staggering number, and just think of the happy families and projects that have benefitted from those doors! In fact, 100,000 bifold doors is enough to cover 22 football pitches. Which we can all agree is a huge achievement for everyone involved.

That's pretty much all the news I have to share this week. But before I wrap up – let's talk blinds (pun intended!). We have brand new electric roller blind options from this month onwards, giving you an even greater scope of styles to suit your home.

If you need any further information we have brochures available for bifolds, windows and blinds – and be sure to look out for our advert on the Home Channel from February onwards!

It's been a while since I last filled you in on some of the more detailed happenings here at Bristol Bifold HQ, so I thought I'd take this opportunity to bring you up to speed with all that we have been doing so far in 2015.

From trade-shows to football pitches – keep reading for all our news!

Introducing: Solidor Composite Doors!

What are Solidor Composite Doors?

Has there ever been a moment during your building project or home renovation where you have had to choose durability over style and aesthetic? It's a horrible decision, but one that must be made...or NOT.

For us, the Solidor combines the security, strength and durability that our customers are looking for with the quality, sleek aesthetics and panache that we all wish our homes possessed!

With market firsts, unique colour combinations and exclusive door furniture (all sourced from safely produced, lead free, expert manufacturers) – these doors are a no brainer when wishing to replace the tired façade of an old, new or period property.

Okay, what's so good about them?

Where to begin? Let's start with security – being one of the most considered features of the Solidor Composite it's fair to say security ranks pretty highly in the door's benefits.

With the Avantis lock fitted as standard (arguably the most secure lock on the market at present) the door is incredibly practical for the modern home owner. If you decide to take further steps to protect your home, we also offer a few other added benefits to give you that extra peace of mind.

Mila's Pro Secure handle makes sure that your door handle cannot be tampered with in any way, with the Avantis cylinder guard protecting the lock and a full range of other security boosts to ensure your home is kept entirely safe.

On top of all these discreet safety features, the door itself is a 48mm design, making it 10% thicker that the nearest market competitor – i.e. VERY thick!

I hear you... how can I personalise my door?

It's often difficult to find a door or window that sits perfectly with the rest of your build project without looking out of place, or mismatched. Solidor have the solution to that problem – with the widest range of colours in the market it is more likely that you will be spoilt for choice! There is a selection of 16 colours and wood grains on offer to choose from (for inside and out of the door) with several exclusive finishes in popular colours such as Duck Egg Blue.

And it's not just a stain, or a gel finish – our door colours are what's known as a 'through colour' meaning, yes, it goes right through the door!

You can also choose from a range of beautiful hardware and select features to ensure that your door suits the rest of your home. You are also able to choose from either a chamfered or sculptured door frames meaning your door really is unique to you.

I'm amazed! Anything else?

As you would expect with a market leading product, Solidor offers a complete guarantee on each door sold – covering construction, performance, hardware, glass and accessories. We like to make sure that our customers are being taken care of – and we love that Solidor wants to help us do so.

Another huge plus is that all Solidor composite doors are fully manufactured by tried and trusted British manufacturers and are fully recyclable and are from fully sustainable sources.

Great where do I sign!?

The best way to see if a Solidor Composite is the one for you, is to have a go on our 'Design a Door'. It's a simple tool which allows you to easily view your colour options and design your own door – just have a play and see what takes your fancy! You can also check out the prices for the doors, and once you've completed the enquiry form all information will be whizzed over to us where we can generate a quote for you. Simple as that!

Family Focus

With family from all corners of the country descending on you for Christmas it can sometimes hard to keep your home looking glorious (as it is all year round...right?) but with a few simple touches it's easy to hide clutter with festive décor and keep family of all ages occupied.

We couldn't go through a whole blog post without a little mention of bifold doors (as they are our very favourite thing to discuss!) and they really can be a great focal point for Christmas decoration. We've seen customers adorn the edges of their doors with twinkling lights, creating a rather grand entrance as well as looking beautiful from the outside. Exciting and beautiful to look at for old and young.

Inside out...

Now you've made a grand entrance, what's good to look at out of your doors? Some people enjoy going all out with Christmas lights, a sleigh on the roof and reindeers in the front lawn...but if that's not your bag, some simple fairy lights around your doorways or above your porch can look simple, cosy and festive.

Talking of cosy...

A roaring fire is a staple piece of everyone's ideal Christmas, surely? They can make homes of all shapes and sizes feel like a Christmas song lyric. But if, like the majority of us, you don't have a traditional log fire, all is not lost! The vast array of gas fires available can help solve this, with many affixing to a wall and instantly creating a warm fuzzy feeling inside! Just think of that subtle glow reflecting out into the blackness through your bifold doors. Beware of jealous neighbours!

Don't blow the budget!

Everyone wants to have Christmas in a home they deign as 'perfect' but don't have eyes bigger than your wallet/timescale! Christmas is, after all, about spending times with loved ones and your refurbished kitchen, or your brand new extension will pale in comparison.

December is here, Christmas songs are officially allowed on our office radios and the decorations have begun to sneak into our homes. This blog post will give you our top five tips to create a festive, cosy and beautiful home this year.

The weather outside may be frightful, but read on to find out how to keep your inside space looking delightful (with the help of bifold doors!).

A Bristol Based Case Study!

Old to new...

This project started out as a set of french doors, complete with a small window to the side. These served their purpose, but didn't let much light in and didn't do the property or garden justice.

Whatley 2

Bristol Bifold was called in to replace the tired french doors with a set of 3 leaf bifold doors, opening out onto a newly landscaped garden.

A transformation!

"Bristol bifold were amazing. They took out the old doors and put new ones in all in one day! It has totally transformed out kitchen and the children love watching the sky change colour."

The doors not only transform the property from the exterior, but they change the way the family lives within the property, opening up their kitchen space and, as always, bringing the outside in!

Whatley 1

"Now its summer we come home from school and open the doors and we just sit back and relax really has been the best thing we've done. The doors are full height right to the ceiling so the light is amazing. Thank you Bristol Bifold!"

This week's blog post features a project close to home for us, an amazing transformation in our home city - Bristol!

Dark nights, cosy indoor spaces!

Below Title

Getting cosy...

We all like to batton down the hatches in the evening, lock the door, shut the curtains and snuggle up for the night. We also like, on a sunny day to open our bifold doors wide allowing the summer air into our homes and doubling our space. You might think that achieving both is impossible – but it's not!

There are many options when it comes to covering your bifold doors in the winter, fear not, no doors are too wide to feel cosy! A frequent favourite of our customers are integral blinds. No fuss, no messy cords and no dust gathering on your blinds. A crank of a lever or flick of a switch and your blinds are closed and your window becomes a wall again. INSERT LINK TO IB.

Curtains vs. Blinds?

Another way to tuck your home in at night is curtains. Chose a thick pair of floor to ceiling curtains to cover the space – voila, job done! But if you don't want the expense of curtains or simply don't like the look of them (hiding away your beautiful bifolds!) then roman blinds might be the way to go. We can make your cords as long or short as required (to keep away from curious little hands, and paws!) and they are usually wipe clean, neat and keep the doors accessible.

If it's looking out into the dark unknown that you don't like, how about getting some subtle outdoor lighting so that you can see and enjoy your garden at night? Some uplighters buried among the plants could look lovely and there are many solar types so you won't waste a fortune on electricity.

As you can see, there are a lot of options and we appreciate that these are not easy decisions to make – that's why you are welcome to pop in and see us at any time for a friendly chat about any of the above options!

Dark nights, cosy fires, curling up in front of the telly with something warming – all things associated with Autumn/Winter. It all sounds very nice, but what about your bifolds!? This post will show you how to make the most of your space in the winter months and dress your bifold doors appropriately!

Whether it be integral blinds, some thick curtains or individual blinds, there are many options to shut the world out on a winter evening.

Sprucing up, on the cheap!

Look after your lawn!

It might sound pretty obvious, but your lawn is the biggest surface area in your garden and it really pays to keep it looking healthy. Whether your bifold doors are closed or open, you'll be able to see your lawn. If your lawn looks dead, your garden will certainly look a bit lacklustre.

We'd reccomend fertilising and de-weeding frequently, as well as making sure to seed any bare patches.

Bring some colour..

Everything and everyone looks better with a splash of colour. Grab some insexpensive, brightly coloured pots and plant them up with garden essentials - geraniums, marigolds and daisies.

Brightening up your garden will make the sun shine, even when it's not.

Light & Bright

Talking of light...we would deinitely suggest adding a few decorative lights. Picture an evening dinner party, a candle lit table reflecting in your bifold doors, then spilling out to the garden afterwards with lights guiding your way through. And it's not hard, a few battery operated flickering bulbs inside a few old jam jars, and tra-da, instant romantic lighting!

Times are tough more often than not, and we all want our homes to be picture perfect, so here are some handy tips to keep your garden looking beautiful on a budget.

Inspiring Outdoor Spaces

This time of year is perfect for thinking about all the little (and large!) changes you would like to make to your property in the coming spring when finances have recovered from the Christmas period.

Whilst you're inside being warmed by the fire, you can begin planning next year's developments.

This customer used their time wisely and decided on a summer outside seating area  to compliment their home during the next season.

IMG 2563

They installed a 3-leaf bifold door to the side of their property, opening out from their living room to a patioed area of their garden.

The doors blend in seamlessly with the white of the lower section of their property, allowing them to come and go as they please and hold summer bbq's and dinner parties that spill out into the garden.

What will you be planning this winter to brighten your spring?

With the nights drawing in and the sun showing it's face less and less, we're finding ourselves with more time on our hands, time that can be put to great use...planning!

A Proud Moment: The National Business Awards 2014

National Business Awards 2014

The reason for this extra pride this month, is that Origin Global have been nominated for The Growth Business of the Year at the 2014 National Business Awards!

This is very exciting news and deserves a huge well done to Origin. They have been described as  "a traditional business which has developed innovative systems and processes that enable it to offer its bespoke product with massively improved lead times" - which we fully agree with.

"It's not our lead time..."

A primary reason we use Origin, is the fact that they are able to turn around a bespoke set of bifold doors, specifically designed for each of our customers at a lead time to suit the customer. The fact that they are traditionlly run is an added bonus, as we are a family bonus and wanted to extend our business to other families! It's one big happy family in the fenestration industry...!

As you know, we pick our suppliers very carefully, as we are aware that a fitting can only be as good as the product we are installing. Hence our reason for using the Origin Origin as our typical aluminium bifold door.

We work very closely with Origin to provide the perfect door for each of our customers, and due to our close relationship with them, are as proud as punch when they are recognised for their hard work! Read on to discover why we are extra proud this month.

A few words...

We recently fitted a wide set of bifold doors for Gary - completely matching the sleek feel of his home. From the colour to the shape and fit of the doors, everything complimented Gary's minimal and modern decor.

IMG 2422 1

After fitting, Gary got in touch to send us a few photos of the completed job along with a few words....

"Compare the market?

No need.

Bristol Bi-Fold

By far

By the best (or Buy the best!)"

Thanks Gary!

We thought this was a great way to express his satisfaction with our work, a little poem! Of course, we expect this level of satisfaction with every customer, but it is very nice when they find the time to jot us a few lines, especially when they are in haiku format!

As I may have mentioned in our last post, we love, love, love feedback in all shapes and sizes. So when we received this little ditty from Gary Plew after fitting a set of bifold doors for him.
