6 things you NEED to know when considering the cost of your bifold door.

WHY do some bifold doors cost so much more than others? It’s a good question, two doors the same size and spec, from different suppliers can be £1000’s of pounds apart!

The truth is, it’s a bit like buying a car, you could buy a Ford Fiesta or an X type Jaguar, they both get you from A to B, but they perform quite differently. Bifold doors are exactly the same and the end of the day you get what you pay for.

Still confused? Here’s 6 things you need to know to help you consider how important the cost of your bifold door is to you:

1. Manufacturing method

There are brands such as Smarts or REAL who manufacture the components and sell them in kit form to independent manufacturers. This method produces an affordable door but the downside is that there is no way of ensuring consist quality. The doors carry the brands name but the quality will vary between manufacturers.

Alternatively, bifold doors produced in house (such as the Origin and Sunflex doors), are likely to be finished to a higher standard. These manufacturers have total control from start to finish. Whilst you pay more, there is no doubt you will have a better quality product.turers.

2. Research and Development

It’s worth considering how much importance the brands put into the design and development of their doors. By continually challenging themselves to improve, spend time and money on finding the best solutions to the smallest of problems, it's likely to result in a better product. They may ask; ‘How can we make the door run more smoothly? How can we increase security and thermal properties? If we're going to guarantee this door for 20 years what's the best material to use?’ The upside? whilst you pay more to have the answers to these questions, you will benefit from a superior bifold door.

3. Components

As you’d expect when buying a car, the quality of the components will affect the price. A rolls Royce may have leather seats and a hand-finished dash compared to fabric seats and a moulded plastic dash in a cheaper Astra.

A bifold is the same, the quality of hinges, rollers, bearings and even the grade of aluminium used to make the panels vary greatly. As with a car, you get what you pay for.

4. Number of panels

Not all doors are created equal! The number of panels in your bifold has a huge impact on the look and operation of the mechanism as well as the price. It is worth taking advice as a 3 leaf bifold at 3500mm wide can be over £1500 cheaper than a 4 leaf door of the same width. Such a large disparity should not be ignored.

5. Colours

Just about every manufacturer charges extra for any colour other than white. Most will increase the price by a percentage depending on your choice. There might be an additional 5% for ‘stock’ colours such as Anthracite grey, or an additional 10% for other non-stock colours. Wood grains can be more, as can ‘dual’ colours where the inside and outside are different.

 6. Glass

The type glass, the gas inside the unit and the coatings on the glass all have an impact on the final price. Double glazed units are typically made from toughened glass, coated with a ‘Low E’ soft coat, filled with argon gas and assembled using thermal spacing bars. Depending on the qualities that are important to you, it’s possible to upgrade any of these componants to improve heat retaining, heat reflecting, acoustic or strength properties. These will ultimately define the price you pay.

No two bifolds are the same and by purchasing on price alone you may be missing out on the different qualities of the door that are important to you.
